Maria
Olga grew up in Ukraine and has lived in the United States for the last 28 years, but her mother, Maria, was in Kyiv at the time of the Russian invasion. Maria, already having a U.S. visa, was able to make it safely to live with Olga in the weeks following the invasion through the miraculous help of family and friends. Maria, 81, doesn't speak any English and has never lived away from Ukraine. The transition is laced with sorrow for her country and her life back home. It is also full of love and gratitude for her daughter. Singing Ukrainian folk songs together is a way they carry these feelings that must live so closely together. What would a mother want to capture about her story to her daughter after enduring so much? This is Maria's song.
